I've been so busy lately, but have finally managed to carve out time to work on the latest instalment in the 'Chronicles of Esha' romantasy series.
The first trilogy was centred around Ember, a woman from Earth thrust through a magical portal by a fae prince, into the lavish, luxurious, lustful Kingdom of Swords.
Now we're heading to the Kingdom of Skies! In this fast-paced standalone,
Jana is a street spy and courier, trying to make ends meet by the art of dodgy dealings, when she accidentally tangles with stern and sexy king's-guard Kye, and finds herself on a reluctant mission to protect the city from marauding twisted fae.
Check out my first draft excerpt and let me know what you think!
"Two fae were coming toward her, young and beautiful, leaning on each other as they strolled, hands clasped, wings just touching, the sound of gentle laughter over a shared joke drifting on the breeze. Something about them made Jana pause, something about their effortless grace and beauty that didn’t arouse envy or disquiet, but just a glad feeling inside her that love did exist and she was grateful to have witnessed it on this calm, clear evening.
Half-amused by her own sentimentality, she quickly looked away before they could catch her staring and crouched to adjust the papers in her boot. They were itching her leg, and she twitched them into a more comfortable position … and then froze. Something was crawling up the bank of the canal.
It was a dog, just a dog, her mind insisted, while her eyes screamed that no, it bloody wasn’t, because a dog didn’t look like a skeletal hunchback on hands and knees, scrabbling at the grassy sods for balance, grunting and hissing under its breath. Dogs didn’t dress in ragged clothing, with flayed flesh visible underneath, with peeks of putrefied flesh and white bone gleaming in the torchlight. That was not a fucking dog.
Without thinking, she slid into the shadows like a knife through butter. The two fae in love didn’t. They stopped in horror, and there was only time for one to gasp before the hunchback dog thing was on her, its jaws opening to bite her face, fingernail claws lacerating her flesh. The other was shoved to the ground, and although he rolled and attempted to magik a defence with a puff of energy shooting from his fingers, it wasn’t enough to stop the thing from diving onto him and tearing his throat out.
The thing straddled him and began to feed, and Jana broke into a run, heading for the bridge, heading for the safety of home as fast as she could."
Eeek! Wish me luck! I hope to have this new romantasy read finished soon!!
